Important Days & Themes
National and international days, their dates and yearly observance themes.
Seven concepts. Tier-1 GA here is almost never arithmetic — it is which observance falls on which date, and which Indian day is tied to whose birthday — so each concept is a table you can scan, plus a quick check that tests the confusion the paper actually sets.

1India's civic calendar anchors
Four dates anchor Indian civics GK and they are tested as a set, not one at a time. Republic Day on 26 January marks the Constitution coming into force in 1950. Independence Day on 15 August marks freedom in 1947. Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October is both a national holiday and the International Day of Non-Violence. Constitution Day — Samvidhan Divas — on 26 November commemorates the adoption of the Constitution in 1949, one year before it was enforced — an observance often tested beside the three national holidays, not a fourth gazetted national holiday.
Figure. Four civic anchors: Republic Day and Independence Day are national holidays; Gandhi Jayanti doubles as the International Day of Non-Violence; Constitution Day (26 Nov 1949 adoption) is often tested beside them, not as a fourth gazetted national holiday.
| Day | Date | What it marks |
|---|---|---|
| Republic Day | 26 January | Constitution enforced, 1950 |
| Independence Day | 15 August | Independence, 1947 |
| Gandhi Jayanti / International Day of Non-Violence | 2 October | Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary |
| Constitution Day (Samvidhan Divas) | 26 November | Constitution adopted, 1949 |
A school assembly is planned for the anniversary of the Constitution's adoption — not the day it came into force. Which date should the notice carry?
- 26 January
- 26 November
- 15 August
26 November 1949 is adoption (Constitution Day); 26 January 1950 is enforcement (Republic Day). 15 August is Independence Day — a different milestone entirely.
2Environment and health on the world calendar
International observances cluster by theme, and neighbouring dates within a cluster are easy to swap. World Water Day is 22 March; Earth Day is 22 April; World Health Day is 7 April; World Cancer Day is 4 February. World Environment Day is 5 June and International Yoga Day is 21 June — both fall in June. World Ozone Day is 16 September, and World AIDS Day is 1 December.
Figure. Environment and health dates cluster: Water 22 March, Earth 22 April, Health 7 April; June packs Environment Day (5th) and Yoga Day (21st) — the pair examiners swap.
| Observance | Date | Theme cue |
|---|---|---|
| World Cancer Day | 4 February | Cancer awareness |
| World Health Day | 7 April | Global public health |
| World Water Day | 22 March | Fresh water |
| Earth Day | 22 April | Planet Earth |
| World Environment Day | 5 June | Environment protection |
| International Yoga Day | 21 June | Yoga for wellness |
| World Ozone Day | 16 September | Ozone layer |
| World AIDS Day | 1 December | HIV/AIDS awareness |
A ministry circular asks offices to mark the UN's principal environment observance in the first week of June. Which date fits the brief?
- 21 June — International Yoga Day
- 5 June — World Environment Day
- 22 April — Earth Day
World Environment Day is explicitly 5 June. Yoga Day is later in June and is wellness-themed; Earth Day is April and planet-themed, not the June environment slot.
3National Science Day and the Raman Effect
India marks National Science Day on 28 February each year. It commemorates Sir C. V. Raman's discovery of the Raman Effect on 28 February 1928 — the inelastic scattering of light that later brought him the Nobel Prize in Physics. The date is fixed to the discovery, not to a generic 'science week', which is why 28 February beats the nearby environment dates in MCQs.
Figure. National Science Day locks to the discovery date: Raman reported the Raman Effect on 28 February 1928; India observes that anniversary each year.
What the day commemorates
- The discoveryOn 28 February 1928, C. V. Raman reported the Raman Effect — light scattering with a wavelength shift that reveals molecular structure.
- The honourThe work earned Raman the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics, the first Nobel in science for an Indian.
- The observanceIndia observes 28 February as National Science Day to mark that discovery anniversary each year.
National Science Day is observed in India on which date, and what does it commemorate?
- 22 April — Earth Day and planetary science
- 28 February — C. V. Raman's Raman Effect
- 5 June — World Environment Day
28 February marks the 1928 discovery of the Raman Effect. Earth Day and Environment Day are international environment observances on different dates.
4Teachers' Day in India versus the world
India celebrates Teachers' Day on 5 September, the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan — philosopher, scholar and the second President of India. UNESCO's World Teachers' Day falls on 5 October and is a separate international observance. Examiners often swap the two October and September dates, or ask which personality India's day honours.
Figure. India's Teachers' Day is 5 September (Radhakrishnan); UNESCO's World Teachers' Day is 5 October — examiners swap the months.
Telling the two apart
- India's day5 September — honours Dr. S. Radhakrishnan's birth anniversary.
- World day5 October — UNESCO's global Teachers' Day, not tied to an Indian president.
- The trapBoth mention teachers; only India's date is linked to Radhakrishnan.
Teachers' Day in India is celebrated on 5 September to mark the birthday of which personality?
- Jawaharlal Nehru
- Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
- Swami Vivekananda
5 September is Radhakrishnan's birth anniversary. Nehru is Children's Day (14 November); Vivekananda is National Youth Day (12 January).
5Indian days tied to birthdays
Several high-yield Indian observances are anchored to a leader's birth date, and the paper tests the person as often as the date. Teachers' Day on 5 September marks Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Children's Day on 14 November is Jawaharlal Nehru's birthday — he was fondly called Chacha Nehru by children. National Youth Day on 12 January marks Swami Vivekananda's birth anniversary. International Women's Day on 8 March is a global observance without an Indian birthday link.
Figure. Birthday chain for Indian person-days: Vivekananda → Youth Day (12 Jan), Radhakrishnan → Teachers' Day (5 Sep), Nehru → Children's Day (14 Nov).
| Observance | Date | Linked personality |
|---|---|---|
| National Youth Day | 12 January | Swami Vivekananda |
| Teachers' Day (India) | 5 September | Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan |
| International Women's Day | 8 March | Global — no Indian birthday link |
| Children's Day (India) | 14 November | Jawaharlal Nehru |
A quiz club asks which November observance in India celebrates the first Prime Minister's birthday. Which day should they pick?
- 26 November — Constitution Day
- 14 November — Children's Day
- 2 October — Gandhi Jayanti
14 November is Nehru's birthday and India's Children's Day. Constitution Day is 26 November; Gandhi Jayanti is 2 October.
6UN Day and human-rights observances
United Nations Day is observed on 24 October, marking the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945. Human Rights Day follows on 10 December, the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. World AIDS Day on 1 December and World Water Day on 22 March are UN-linked health and resource observances that sit in different months — in December, AIDS Day is the 1st and Human Rights Day is the 10th.
Figure. UN-linked calendar: Water Day 22 March, UN Day 24 October (Charter 1945), then December's pair — AIDS Day on the 1st and Human Rights Day on the 10th.
| Observance | Date | UN link |
|---|---|---|
| World Water Day | 22 March | Fresh-water resource |
| United Nations Day | 24 October | UN Charter in force, 1945 |
| World AIDS Day | 1 December | Global HIV/AIDS response |
| Human Rights Day | 10 December | Universal Declaration, 1948 |
A diplomat's speech is scheduled for the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, not the founding of the UN itself. Which date belongs on the invitation?
- 24 October — United Nations Day
- 10 December — Human Rights Day
- 1 December — World AIDS Day
10 December marks the 1948 Declaration. UN Day is 24 October (Charter entry into force). World AIDS Day is 1 December — a health observance, not the human-rights anniversary.
7Double observances and month clusters
Some dates carry more than one label, and some months bundle several observances — both patterns are deliberate revision pegs. Two October is Gandhi Jayanti and the International Day of Non-Violence on the same calendar square. June packs World Environment Day on the 5th and International Yoga Day on the 21st. Linking Indian person-days to birthdays — Radhakrishnan, Nehru, Vivekananda — is the fastest way to recover a date under time pressure.
Figure. Two revision shapes: one calendar square carries Gandhi Jayanti and the International Day of Non-Violence; June packs Environment Day (5th) then Yoga Day (21st).
Revision clusters
- October double2 October — Gandhi Jayanti plus International Day of Non-Violence; one date, two names.
- June pair5 June — World Environment Day; 21 June — International Yoga Day.
- Birthday chain12 Jan Vivekananda, 5 Sep Radhakrishnan, 14 Nov Nehru — person first, date follows.
An invigilator lists three June observances and asks which pair both fall in that month and belong to environment or wellness themes. Which answer fits?
- 5 June and 21 June — Environment Day and Yoga Day
- 22 March and 22 April — Water Day and Earth Day
- 26 January and 15 August — Republic Day and Independence Day
Only the June pair satisfies both parts of the question. March/April dates are spring environment days; January/August are Indian national days.
