RBI Grade B Officer · Banking & Financial Awareness
Digital Payments & Fintech
Covers digital payment systems such as UPI, NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, CBDC and emerging fintech in banking.
Eight concepts. Bank exams contrast who runs which rail — RBI for RTGS/NEFT, NPCI for UPI/IMPS — and the RTGS ₹2 lakh floor versus batch NEFT. Tables and pegs carry the recall load; nothing here earns a worked ledger.

1Unified Payments Interface
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), launched by NPCI in 2016, enables instant real-time money transfer between bank accounts via a mobile app using a Virtual Payment Address (VPA). It is available 24×7.
UPI is a retail NPCI product — not an RBI-operated rail like RTGS or NEFT. The VPA is the handle that lets users pay without typing full account credentials each time.
Figure. UPI (NPCI, 2016) moves money instantly 24×7 using a Virtual Payment Address — a retail NPCI product, not an RBI-operated rail like RTGS.
| Feature | Fact |
|---|---|
| Operator | NPCI |
| Launch year | 2016 |
| Addressing | Virtual Payment Address (VPA) |
| Availability | 24×7 instant transfer |
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is developed and operated by which organization?
- The RBI, because it also runs RTGS
- NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India)
- SEBI, because UPI settles equity trades
UPI is an NPCI retail product launched in 2016. RTGS/NEFT are RBI-operated; SEBI is the securities regulator.
2RTGS — real-time gross settlement
Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) is used for high-value transactions. The minimum amount is ₹2 lakh, with no upper limit. Settlement is individual and continuous in real time — gross, not netted in a batch.
RTGS is operated by the RBI and is available 24×7. The exam contrast is 'high-value, real-time, ₹2 lakh floor' versus NEFT's any-amount batches.
Figure. RTGS is the RBI high-value rail: minimum Rs 2 lakh, no upper limit, each payment settled individually in real time (gross, not batched).
| Feature | Rule |
|---|---|
| Minimum | ₹2 lakh |
| Maximum | No upper limit |
| Settlement | Real-time, gross (transaction by transaction) |
| Operator | RBI |
| Availability | 24×7 |
What is the minimum amount that can be transferred using the RTGS system?
- ₹10,000
- ₹1 lakh
- ₹2 lakh
RTGS has a ₹2 lakh minimum and no maximum. NEFT and IMPS do not share that floor.
3NEFT — batch settlement
National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) settles transactions in half-hourly batches. There is no minimum or maximum amount limit. NEFT is operated by the RBI and works round the clock (24×7×365 in the source formulas).
Batch settlement is the defining contrast with RTGS: NEFT nets/settles on a schedule; RTGS settles each payment as it comes, in real time.
Figure. NEFT settles on a half-hourly batch schedule — any amount, RBI-operated, round the clock. The spikes are settlement windows, not continuous gross clearing.
| Feature | Rule |
|---|---|
| Settlement | Half-hourly batches |
| Amount limits | No minimum or maximum |
| Operator | RBI |
| Availability | 24×7×365 |
A customer must send ₹50,000 now. RTGS rejects it for being below its floor. Which RBI-operated system still fits, and how does it settle?
- NEFT — half-hourly batches, no minimum amount
- RTGS — still mandatory above ₹10,000
- Only cash at the branch, because electronic systems require ₹2 lakh
NEFT has no minimum and settles in half-hourly batches under RBI operation. RTGS's ₹2 lakh floor blocks ₹50,000.
4IMPS — immediate payment service
Immediate Payment Service (IMPS), offered by NPCI, allows instant interbank fund transfer 24×7 through mobile, internet and ATM channels.
IMPS sits with UPI on the NPCI retail side of the operator split — instant like UPI, but named separately in exam lists alongside channel cues (mobile / internet / ATM).
Figure. IMPS is NPCI's instant interbank transfer across mobile, internet and ATM channels — retail side of the operator split with UPI.
| Feature | Fact |
|---|---|
| Operator | NPCI |
| Speed | Instant |
| Availability | 24×7 |
| Channels | Mobile, internet, ATM |
A bank promotes instant 24×7 interbank transfer via mobile, internet and ATM under an NPCI product that is not UPI. Which rail is that?
- IMPS
- RTGS only
- NEFT half-hourly batches exclusively
IMPS is NPCI's instant multi-channel service. RTGS/NEFT are RBI-operated; NEFT is batch, not the IMPS description.
5RBI rails vs NPCI products
Remember the operator split: RTGS and NEFT are operated by the RBI, while UPI, IMPS, RuPay and NACH are operated by the NPCI. Mixing those columns is the highest-frequency trap in this topic.
When a stem says 'developed and operated by NPCI', UPI (or IMPS/RuPay/NACH) is in play — not RTGS.
Figure. Highest-frequency trap: RTGS and NEFT are RBI-operated; UPI, IMPS, RuPay and NACH are NPCI. 'Developed by NPCI' never points at RTGS.
| Operator | Systems / products |
|---|---|
| RBI | RTGS, NEFT |
| NPCI | UPI, IMPS, RuPay, NACH |
A payment product is described as retail, NPCI-operated, and grouped with RuPay and NACH. Which pair fits that column?
- RTGS and NEFT
- UPI and IMPS
- Only the Sensex clearing house
UPI and IMPS sit with RuPay and NACH under NPCI. RTGS and NEFT are RBI-operated.
6NPCI as umbrella organisation
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is a not-for-profit umbrella organisation for retail payments. It was set up in 2008 under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007.
NPCI is the institutional home of UPI, IMPS, RuPay and NACH in the source notes — the Act year (2007) and set-up year (2008) are one year apart, similar in spirit to the RBI Act/start trap elsewhere.
Figure. NPCI is the not-for-profit retail-payments umbrella set up in 2008 under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 — home of UPI, IMPS, RuPay and NACH.
| Item | Fact |
|---|---|
| Form | Not-for-profit umbrella for retail payments |
| Set up | 2008 |
| Legal backdrop | Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 |
| Flagship products | UPI, IMPS, RuPay, NACH |
NPCI was set up in which year, under which Act named in the source notes?
- 2008, under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007
- 2016, under the RBI Act, 1934, as a department of SEBI
- 1949, under the Banking Regulation Act as a public sector bank
NPCI was set up in 2008 under the PSS Act, 2007. 2016 is UPI's launch year, not NPCI's founding.
7CBDC — the Digital Rupee
The Digital Rupee (e-Rupee) is India's Central Bank Digital Currency issued by the RBI as a sovereign digital form of currency. It is distinct from cryptocurrencies and from private digital wallets.
Two types appear in the source notes: retail CBDC (e-Rupee-R for the public) and wholesale CBDC (e-Rupee-W for interbank settlement). Both are RBI-issued.
Figure. The Digital Rupee is RBI-issued CBDC — sovereign money, not private crypto. Retail e-Rupee-R is for the public; wholesale e-Rupee-W is for interbank settlement.
| Type | Label | Audience |
|---|---|---|
| Retail CBDC | e-Rupee-R | Public |
| Wholesale CBDC | e-Rupee-W | Interbank settlement |
| Issuer | RBI | Sovereign — not a private crypto |
A stem contrasts a sovereign digital currency issued by the RBI with a private cryptocurrency wallet. Which description fits the Digital Rupee?
- CBDC e-Rupee issued by the RBI (retail e-Rupee-R or wholesale e-Rupee-W)
- A private stablecoin issued only by NPCI with no RBI role
- An equity ETF listed solely under Sensex rules
The Digital Rupee is RBI-issued CBDC in retail and wholesale forms — not private crypto and not an equity product.
8RTGS, NEFT, IMPS and UPI compared
Put the four everyday rails on one sheet: RTGS for high-value real-time gross (₹2 lakh minimum, RBI); NEFT for any-amount half-hourly batches (RBI); IMPS for NPCI instant multi-channel transfer; UPI for NPCI app/VPA instant transfer since 2016.
If the stem stresses minimum amount, think RTGS. If it stresses batches, think NEFT. If it stresses NPCI retail instant, think UPI or IMPS.
Figure. Stem cues: minimum amount → RTGS; batches → NEFT; NPCI retail instant → UPI or IMPS. Operator and settlement style decide the rail.
| Rail | Operator | Settlement / speed | Amount cue |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTGS | RBI | Real-time gross | Min ₹2 lakh; no max |
| NEFT | RBI | Half-hourly batches | No min / no max |
| IMPS | NPCI | Instant 24×7 | Instant interbank (channels: mobile/internet/ATM) |
| UPI | NPCI | Instant 24×7 | VPA / mobile apps (from 2016) |
A treasurer must move ₹5 crore immediately with gross real-time settlement on an RBI rail. Which system fits?
- NEFT half-hourly batch only
- RTGS
- UPI VPA transfer as the only legal option for crore-scale wires
₹5 crore clears the ₹2 lakh RTGS floor and needs real-time gross settlement on the RBI rail. NEFT is batch; UPI is NPCI retail, not the high-value gross system described.
Notes
- UPI: The Unified Payments Interface, launched by NPCI in 2016, enables instant real-time money transfer between bank accounts via a mobile app using a Virtual Payment Address (VPA), available 24x7.
- RTGS: Real Time Gross Settlement is used for high-value transactions (minimum Rs 2 lakh, no upper limit) and settles transactions individually and continuously in real time; it is operated by the RBI and available 24x7.
- NEFT: National Electronic Funds Transfer settles transactions in half-hourly batches with no minimum or maximum limit; it is operated by the RBI and works round the clock.
- IMPS: Immediate Payment Service, offered by NPCI, allows instant interbank fund transfer 24x7 through mobile, internet and ATM channels.
- CBDC: The Digital Rupee (e-Rupee) is India's Central Bank Digital Currency issued by the RBI as a sovereign digital form of currency, distinct from cryptocurrencies and private digital wallets.
Formulas
- RTGS threshold: Minimum transaction value Rs 2 lakh with no maximum limit; settlement is real-time and gross (transaction by transaction).
- NEFT settlement: Batch-wise settlement in half-hourly cycles; no minimum or maximum amount limit; available 24x7x365.
- Operators: RTGS and NEFT are operated by the RBI, while UPI, IMPS, RuPay and NACH are operated by the NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India).
- NPCI: A not-for-profit umbrella organization for retail payments set up in 2008 under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007.
- CBDC types: Retail CBDC (e-Rupee-R for the public) and Wholesale CBDC (e-Rupee-W for interbank settlement), both issued by the RBI.
Exam traps & shortcuts
- RTGS = 'Real Time Gross' = big-value, one-by-one, minimum Rs 2 lakh; NEFT = batch, any amount - contrast by value and settlement mode.
- NPCI runs the retail rails (UPI, IMPS, RuPay); RBI runs RTGS and NEFT - group products by their operator.
- UPI and IMPS are 'instant/24x7'; NEFT settles in batches - remember which are truly real-time.
- CBDC (Digital Rupee) is issued by the RBI and is legal tender, unlike private cryptocurrencies - do not confuse the two.
