TOEFL iBT Structure and Scoring
The four-section order and 1 to 6 band scoring of the enhanced TOEFL iBT.
Five concepts — the enhanced TOEFL iBT (from 21 January 2026) in one sitting. Sections run Reading → Listening → Writing → Speaking. Each section and the overall score are reported on a 1–6 band scale (0.5 steps); the overall band is the average of the four section bands. For a two-year transition, reports also show a comparable 0–120 figure. Universities may still quote either scale, and often add per-section floors.

1Four sections, one sitting, fixed order
The enhanced TOEFL iBT is a single computer-based session with four sections taken back to back: Reading, then Listening, then Writing, then Speaking. Reading and Listening are multistage adaptive — performance on the first module routes the difficulty of the second. You cannot reorder sections or split a standard registration across days.
Prep that ignores any one section is risky — a weak Speaking band pulls the overall average down as much as a weak Reading band, even if Writing is strong.

On a standard enhanced TOEFL iBT registration, which section comes immediately after Listening?

The fixed order is Reading → Listening → Writing → Speaking. Reading precedes Listening, so it cannot follow it. Speaking is last, after Writing.
2Each section scores 1–6; selected-response has no penalty
Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing are each reported as a band from 1 to 6 in half-band steps (for example 4.0 or 4.5). Selected-response items in Reading and Listening do not deduct for a wrong answer, so a blank and a wrong pick both score zero on that item, while a guess still keeps a chance of credit.
Speaking and Writing responses are rated against task-specific scoring guides (intelligibility, on-topic elaboration, language control, and similar criteria) and then converted onto the same 1–6 section band scale as Reading and Listening.

Use the no-penalty rule
- Spot selected-responseReading and Listening items where you pick from given options — never leave these blank.

A Reading question you cannot narrow down should be
- Left blank to avoid losing points
- Answered with your best guess among the options
- Marked for review and left unanswered until the section ends
Enhanced TOEFL iBT selected-response items do not deduct for wrong answers. Blank and wrong both score zero on that item, but a guess retains a chance of credit. Leaving it blank until time runs out is the same as leaving it blank permanently.
3Overall score: average the four section bands
The reported overall TOEFL iBT score is the average of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest whole or half band. There is no section weighting — a half-band lost in Listening moves the overall average exactly as a half-band lost in Writing would.
For two years after 21 January 2026, score reports also include a comparable 0–120 figure mapped from the band scale. When a brochure still quotes "TOEFL 100", treat that as the transitional concordance unless the school has switched to 1–6 bands.

Building an overall band from section bands
A test-taker scores Reading 5.0, Listening 4.5, Writing 4.0, Speaking 4.5. What is the overall TOEFL iBT band?

Pro tip. Pair Reading with Listening and Writing with Speaking, add the two pair-sums, then divide by four — same arithmetic as averaging four numbers, fewer places to drop a half-band.
Section bands are R 4.0, L 4.5, W 3.5, S 4.0. The overall band is

(4.0 + 4.5 + 3.5 + 4.0) / 4 = 16.0 / 4 = 4.0. There is no weighting. 4.5 rounds one pair too high; 16.0 is the sum before dividing.
4Speaking and Writing: task guides, not right-wrong counts
Speaking and Writing responses are scored against published task guides, not by counting facts recalled. ETS uses AI scoring with human-rated training and oversight; a response can be fluent or grammatical and still score low if it never addresses the prompt.
Writing tasks include Build a Sentence (reconstruct grammatically complete sentences), Write an Email, and Write for an Academic Discussion — raters look for accurate structure, on-purpose elaboration, appropriate register, and language control. Speaking tasks include Listen and Repeat (exact, intelligible repetition of heard sentences) and Take an Interview (on-topic, elaborated spoken answers with clear delivery).

A Speaking interview response is fluent and easy to understand but never answers the question asked. The main failure is
- Exact repetition of a prompt sentence
- On-topic elaboration for the interview question
- Selected-response guessing strategy
Fluency without addressing the interviewer's question fails the Take an Interview demand for an on-topic, elaborated answer. Exact repetition is the Listen and Repeat task, not the interview. Guessing strategy belongs to Reading/Listening selected-response, not Speaking.
5MyBest scores, validity, and per-section floors
TOEFL scores are typically valid for two years from the test date. ETS also reports MyBest scores: your highest section band from each skill across valid test dates in the window, averaged into an overall MyBest band. Retaking to lift one weak section can raise MyBest even when a single sitting's overall stays flat.
Universities often publish both a minimum overall score and minimums per section — on either the 1–6 band scale or the transitional 0–120 concordance. Meeting the overall while missing one section floor still fails the requirement.

Check a university requirement
- Read the scaleConfirm whether the programme quotes 1–6 bands, a transitional 0–120 total, or both — then use matching numbers from your report.
- Check overall and every sectionCompare the overall (or MyBest overall if accepted) and each section score to its stated floor.
- Both gates must passQualification needs the overall AND every per-section minimum; one short section fails even at a strong overall.
A programme requires overall band 4.5 with no section below 4.0. Scores are R 5.0, L 4.5, W 5.0, S 3.5 (overall 4.5). The applicant
- Qualifies — the overall meets 4.5
- Does not qualify — Speaking is below 4.0
- Qualifies under MyBest but not this sitting
(5.0 + 4.5 + 5.0 + 3.5) / 4 = 18.0 / 4 = 4.5, so the overall gate passes. Speaking is 3.5, under the per-section floor of 4.0, so the application fails. MyBest is irrelevant until the programme's superscoring policy is confirmed.
Notes
- Four Sections: The TOEFL iBT has four sections — Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing — taken in that order in a single sitting. Each section measures a distinct academic English skill.
- Section Scores 0-30: Each of the four sections is scored on a 0-30 scale, and the four section scores are added to give a total out of 120. There is no negative marking.
- Total Score Range: The overall TOEFL iBT score ranges from 0 to 120. Universities set their own minimum required totals and sometimes minimum per-section scores, so check target-school requirements.
- Speaking and Writing Rubrics: Speaking and Writing responses are rated by both AI scoring and human raters against defined rubrics (delivery/language use/topic development for speaking; development/organisation/language use for writing), then converted to the 0-30 scale.
- Score Validity and MyBest: TOEFL scores are typically valid for two years. ETS also reports 'MyBest scores', combining your highest section scores from different test dates within that validity window.
Formulas
- Total score: Reading (0-30) + Listening (0-30) + Speaking (0-30) + Writing (0-30) = 0-120.
- Section order: Reading → Listening → Speaking → Writing, completed in one session.
- No-negative-marking rule: wrong answers cost nothing, so never leave a selected-response item blank.
- MyBest score: sum of your best-ever section scores across valid test dates.
- Validity rule: scores are generally accepted for two years from the test date.
- Requirement check: compare both your total AND per-section scores against each university's stated minimums.
Exam traps & shortcuts
- Because there is no negative marking, always answer every selected-response question, guessing if necessary.
- Balance your preparation across all four sections — a single weak section drags down the 120-point total.
- Know your target universities' minimum total and per-section scores before planning your prep goals.
- If retaking, focus on your lowest sections; MyBest scoring lets your strongest section results combine across dates.
