Sports events, tournaments, cups, terminologies and recent winners.
Seven concepts on sports static GK: players per side, Olympic origins and motto, term-to-sport vocabulary, Indian sports awards, National Sports Day and Dhyan Chand, four-year mega-event cycles, and a short trophy sheet. Almost nothing computes — match terms and counts from tables.

1Players per team on the field
Standard on-field team sizes recur as pure recall: cricket, football and hockey with 11; volleyball 6; basketball 5; kabaddi 7; kho-kho 9; polo 4.
The useful cluster is the three elevens — cricket, football, hockey — then the odd-count sports kabaddi (7) and basketball (5). Do not invent 'substitutes on the sheet' counts; papers want the playing strength in the formulas.
Figure. On-field playing strength: the three elevens (cricket, football, hockey), then kho-kho 9, kabaddi 7, volleyball 6, basketball 5, polo 4.
| Sport | Players per side |
|---|---|
| Cricket | 11 |
| Football | 11 |
| Hockey | 11 |
| Volleyball | 6 |
| Basketball | 5 |
| Kabaddi | 7 |
| Kho-Kho | 9 |
| Polo | 4 |
A stem asks how many players a kabaddi side fields and someone answers 11 because cricket and hockey are 11. The correction is
- Kabaddi is 11; only basketball is 7
- Kabaddi is 7; cricket, football and hockey are the elevens
- Kabaddi is 5; volleyball is 7
Kabaddi fields 7. Cricket, football and hockey are 11. Basketball is 5; volleyball is 6.
2Modern Olympics — 1896, four years, motto
The modern Olympic Games began in 1896 in Athens. They are held every four years. The Olympic motto is 'Citius, Altius, Fortius' — Faster, Higher, Stronger.
Lock the triad: start year and city, four-year cycle, motto with translation. A stem that moves the first Games to 1900 Paris is testing the 1896 Athens lock.
Figure. Modern Olympics triad: began 1896 in Athens, four-year cycle, motto Citius Altius Fortius — Faster, Higher, Stronger.
| Fact | Lock this |
|---|---|
| Modern Games begin | 1896, Athens |
| Cycle | Every four years |
| Motto (Latin) | Citius, Altius, Fortius |
| Motto (English) | Faster, Higher, Stronger |
Someone says the modern Olympics began in Paris in 1900 and run every two years, with motto 'Faster, Stronger, Higher'. What is wrong?
- Nothing — Paris 1900 is the standard start year
- Began 1896 in Athens; every four years; motto Citius, Altius, Fortius (Faster, Higher, Stronger)
- Began 1896 in Athens, but the cycle is every two years like FIFA
Notes lock 1896 Athens, a four-year cycle, and Citius, Altius, Fortius — Faster, Higher, Stronger. Paris 1900 and a two-year cycle are distractors; the English order is Faster, Higher, Stronger.
3Terms that identify the sport
Vocabulary uniquely identifies the sport: love, deuce, ace and volley belong to tennis; birdie, eagle, par and bogey to golf; googly, yorker and LBW to cricket; checkmate, gambit, castling and stalemate to chess.
If a stem lists deuce, ace and volley, the sport is tennis — not badminton by proximity. Build the term-to-sport table; do not invent definitions beyond the sport lock.
Figure. Term clusters identify the sport: deuce/ace → tennis; birdie/eagle → golf; googly/yorker → cricket; checkmate/gambit → chess.
| Sport | Terms |
|---|---|
| Tennis | Love, deuce, ace, volley |
| Golf | Birdie, eagle, par, bogey |
| Cricket | Googly, yorker, LBW |
| Chess | Checkmate, stalemate, gambit, castling |
The terms deuce, ace and volley appear together. Which sport is in view, and which distractor sport usually steals ace/volley?
- Golf — deuce is a golf scoring term
- Tennis — golf uses birdie/bogey; cricket uses yorker/googly; badminton is the usual wrong neighbour for ace/volley
- Cricket — deuce is a two-wicket term
Deuce, ace and volley are tennis terms in the notes. Golf and cricket have their own vocabularies; badminton is a common neighbour distractor for racket terms.
4Khel Ratna above Arjuna; Dronacharya for coaches
The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award is India’s highest sporting honour. The Arjuna Award recognizes performance. The Dronacharya Award honours coaches. The Dhyan Chand Award marks lifetime achievement.
Khel Ratna is a step above Arjuna. Do not answer a 'highest sporting honour' stem with Arjuna, and do not give Dronacharya to an athlete’s performance citation.
Figure. Honours ladder: Khel Ratna is the highest sporting honour above Arjuna (performance); Dhyan Chand Award is lifetime achievement; Dronacharya is for coaches — not athletes.
| Award | Marks |
|---|---|
| Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna | Highest sporting honour |
| Arjuna Award | Performance |
| Dronacharya Award | Coaching |
| Dhyan Chand Award | Lifetime achievement |
A stem asks for India’s highest sporting honour and the options include Arjuna and Dronacharya. The correct pick is
- Arjuna Award — it outranks Khel Ratna for players
- Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna — highest; Arjuna is performance; Dronacharya is coaching
- Dronacharya Award — highest because coaches create champions
Khel Ratna (Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna) is the highest sporting honour. Arjuna recognizes performance; Dronacharya honours coaches.
529 August — National Sports Day
National Sports Day in India is celebrated on 29 August to mark the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, the hockey legend called 'The Wizard'. The same date chain supports the Khel Ratna renaming in his honour in exam notes.
Hockey is traditionally tied to India’s Olympic glory in the formulas. Lock three facts together: 29 August, Dhyan Chand’s birthday, National Sports Day — not three separate flashcards.
Figure. National Sports Day locks three facts: 29 August, Major Dhyan Chand's birthday, hockey's 'Wizard' — one chain, not three flashcards.
| Fact | Lock this |
|---|---|
| Date | 29 August |
| Person | Major Dhyan Chand |
| Sport cue | Hockey — 'The Wizard' |
| Day | National Sports Day |
National Sports Day is observed on 29 August. Which sportsperson’s birth anniversary does it mark?
- A cricket captain whose birthday falls on Independence Day
- Major Dhyan Chand — hockey’s 'Wizard'; the date is his birth anniversary
- The first Indian Olympic gold medallist in athletics, unrelated to hockey
29 August is Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary and National Sports Day. The hockey/'Wizard' cue is part of the same chain in the notes.
6Mega events on a four-year cycle
Summer Olympics, FIFA World Cup, ICC Cricket World Cup, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games are each held once every four years in the formulas’ cycle sheet.
The teaching point is the shared four-year rhythm, not the next host city. Do not put a rotting 'next venue' into pegs — hosts change; the cycle fact is what the notes lock.
Figure. Shared four-year rhythm across Summer Olympics, FIFA World Cup, ICC Cricket World Cup, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games — cycle fact, not next host city.
| Event | Cycle |
|---|---|
| Summer Olympics | Every four years |
| FIFA World Cup | Every four years |
| ICC Cricket World Cup | Every four years |
| Asian Games | Every four years |
| Commonwealth Games | Every four years |
A claim says the FIFA World Cup is annual while the Olympics are every four years. The accurate sports-cycle sheet says
- FIFA is annual; only cricket’s World Cup is four-yearly
- Summer Olympics, FIFA World Cup, ICC Cricket World Cup, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games are each on a four-year cycle in this topic’s formulas
- All of those events are every two years
The formulas list each of those mega events as once every four years. An annual FIFA cycle is not the fact this topic locks.
7Trophies and top events — short sheet
Sport–trophy associations in the notes stay light: cricket has the Ranji Trophy (domestic first-class) and the ICC World Cup; football’s top event is the FIFA World Cup; hockey contests international trophies. Prefer these stable names over a year’s winner list.
Ranji is domestic first-class cricket — not the ICC World Cup under another name. FIFA World Cup is football’s peak event in this sheet.
Figure. Stable associations: cricket → Ranji Trophy (domestic first-class) and ICC World Cup; football's peak event is the FIFA World Cup.
| Sport | Cue from the notes |
|---|---|
| Cricket | Ranji Trophy (domestic first-class); ICC World Cup |
| Football | FIFA World Cup (top event) |
| Hockey | International trophies / Olympic glory association in formulas |
A stem treats the Ranji Trophy as cricket’s global World Cup. The correction is
- Ranji Trophy is domestic first-class cricket; the ICC World Cup is the global event named in the notes
- Ranji Trophy is football’s Asian championship
- Ranji Trophy and FIFA World Cup are alternate names for one cricket event
Notes separate Ranji (domestic first-class) from the ICC World Cup. FIFA World Cup is football, not a cricket alias.
Notes
- Sport-trophy associations: Cricket has the Ranji Trophy (domestic first-class) and the ICC World Cup; hockey has the trophies contested internationally; football's top event is the FIFA World Cup.
- Players per side: Cricket and football are played with 11 players per team, hockey with 11, volleyball with 6, basketball with 5, and kabaddi with 7.
- Olympics facts: The modern Olympic Games began in 1896 in Athens; they are held every four years, and the Olympic motto is 'Citius, Altius, Fortius' (Faster, Higher, Stronger).
- Indian sports honours: The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award is India's highest sporting honour, the Arjuna Award recognizes performance, and the Dronacharya Award honours coaches.
- Sports terminology: 'Love', 'deuce' and 'ace' belong to tennis; 'birdie', 'eagle' and 'bogey' belong to golf; 'checkmate' and 'stalemate' belong to chess.
Formulas
- Players per team: Cricket 11, Football 11, Hockey 11, Volleyball 6, Basketball 5, Kabaddi 7, Kho-Kho 9, Polo 4.
- Major event cycles: Summer Olympics, FIFA World Cup, ICC Cricket World Cup, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games are each held once every four years.
- Terminology by sport: Tennis (love, deuce, ace, volley), Golf (birdie, eagle, par, bogey), Cricket (googly, yorker, LBW), Chess (checkmate, gambit, castling).
- Indian sports awards: Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna (highest), Arjuna Award (performance), Dronacharya Award (coaching), Dhyan Chand Award (lifetime achievement).
- National games/sports origins: Hockey is traditionally regarded as associated with India's Olympic glory; Dhyan Chand is called 'The Wizard' of hockey, and his birthday (29 August) is National Sports Day.
Exam traps & shortcuts
- Match terms to sports: 'deuce/ace = tennis', 'yorker/googly = cricket', 'birdie/bogey = golf' - the vocabulary uniquely identifies the sport.
- Player counts: remember odd-team sports 'Cricket/Football/Hockey = 11' and 'Kabaddi = 7, Basketball = 5'.
- National Sports Day = 29 August = Dhyan Chand's birthday - chain these three facts.
- Highest sporting award in India is the Khel Ratna (now Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna); Arjuna is a step below.
