Static GK
Unchanging general knowledge on dances, dams, first-in-India, superlatives and miscellaneous facts.
Eight concepts of unchanging general knowledge as SSC and banking papers ask it: firsts in India, dam–river–state triplets, national symbols, state superlatives, institution headquarters, eight classical dances, tallest structures, and river/waterfall facts. This family is almost pure recall — tables and pegs are the product; decorative maps and emblem drawings are not.

1Firsts in India — President to woman PM
Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the first President of India. Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister. Sarojini Naidu was the first woman Governor. Indira Gandhi was the first woman Prime Minister. Pratibha Patil was the first woman President — cluster the 'first woman' facts so they do not collide.
These are stored pairings. A ledger that 'identifies the first PM' and restates Nehru is fabrication.
Figure. Office firsts: Rajendra Prasad (President), Nehru (PM). Keep the woman cluster separate so they do not collide — Naidu (Governor), Indira Gandhi (PM), Pratibha Patil (President).
| First… | Person |
|---|---|
| President | Dr. Rajendra Prasad |
| Prime Minister | Jawaharlal Nehru |
| Woman Governor | Sarojini Naidu |
| Woman Prime Minister | Indira Gandhi |
| Woman President | Pratibha Patil |
A stem asks for India's first woman Prime Minister. Which answer matches the firsts list, and which neighbouring 'first woman' fact must not be swapped in?
- Pratibha Patil — and Indira Gandhi was first woman President
- Indira Gandhi as first woman PM — Pratibha Patil is first woman President; Sarojini Naidu is first woman Governor
- Sarojini Naidu as first woman PM — Nehru was first woman President
Indira Gandhi is first woman PM; Pratibha Patil is first woman President; Sarojini Naidu is first woman Governor. Swapping PM and President is the usual trap.
2Dam–river–state triplets
Tehri Dam (Uttarakhand) on the Bhagirathi is India's tallest dam — about 260 m in the notes. Hirakud Dam (Odisha) on the Mahanadi is among the longest. Bhakra Nangal is on the Sutlej: Bhakra dam in Himachal Pradesh, Nangal side in Punjab — keep the river locked; do not collapse the project to a single state gloss.
Keep a dam–river–state triplet list. Height and length are different superlatives — Tehri is tallest, not 'longest' by default.
Figure. Dam–river–state triplets: Tehri (Bhagirathi, Uttarakhand) tallest ~260 m; Hirakud (Mahanadi, Odisha) among the longest; Bhakra Nangal on the Sutlej spans Himachal and Punjab.
| Dam | River | State / note |
|---|---|---|
| Tehri | Bhagirathi | Uttarakhand; tallest (~260 m) |
| Hirakud | Mahanadi | Odisha; among the longest |
| Bhakra Nangal | Sutlej | Bhakra in Himachal Pradesh; Nangal in Punjab |
The Tehri Dam, India's tallest dam in these notes, is built on which river?
- Mahanadi
- Bhagirathi
- Sutlej
Tehri is on the Bhagirathi in Uttarakhand. Mahanadi is Hirakud; Sutlej is Bhakra Nangal.
3National symbols quick list
The national animal is the Royal Bengal Tiger; national bird the Indian peacock; national flower the lotus; national tree the banyan; national aquatic animal the Ganges river dolphin; national fruit the mango. Hockey is traditionally regarded as the national game in many exam keys.
Tiger–Peacock–Lotus–Banyan is the core four that appear most often. Emblem artwork is not the teaching point — the name pairings are.
Figure. Name pairings only (not emblem art): Tiger, Peacock, Lotus, Banyan, Mango; hockey is the traditional national-game cue in many exam keys.
| Symbol | What to lock |
|---|---|
| Animal | Royal Bengal Tiger |
| Bird | Indian peacock |
| Flower | Lotus |
| Tree | Banyan |
| Aquatic animal | Ganges river dolphin |
| Fruit | Mango |
| Game (traditional exam cue) | Hockey |
India's national aquatic animal, as locked in these notes, is
- Royal Bengal Tiger
- Ganges river dolphin
- Indian peacock
The Ganges river dolphin is the aquatic animal. Tiger is national animal; peacock is national bird.
4Largest, smallest, most populous
Rajasthan is the largest state by area. Goa is the smallest state by area. Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state. Sikkim is the least populous state in the usual exam framing. Ladakh is among the largest Union Territories by area.
Area and population are different ladders — do not answer 'largest' with Uttar Pradesh when the stem says area.
Figure. Two ladders: area (Rajasthan largest / Goa smallest) versus population (Uttar Pradesh most / Sikkim least). Do not answer 'largest' with UP when the stem says area.
| Superlative | Answer |
|---|---|
| Largest state by area | Rajasthan |
| Smallest state by area | Goa |
| Most populous state | Uttar Pradesh |
| Least populous state | Sikkim |
| Large UT by area (cue) | Ladakh among the largest |
A stem asks for the largest state by area. A student answers Uttar Pradesh because it is 'largest' in everyday talk. What is wrong?
- Nothing — area and population use the same state
- Largest by area is Rajasthan; Uttar Pradesh is the most populous
- Goa is largest by area; Sikkim is most populous
Rajasthan leads area; Uttar Pradesh leads population. Goa is smallest by area; Sikkim is least populous — the student's swap confuses the two ladders.
5Institutions and headquarters cities
The Reserve Bank of India is headquartered in Mumbai. ISRO is headquartered in Bengaluru. The Supreme Court and Parliament are located in New Delhi.
City–institution pairs are the examinable load. Do not invent every regulator's pin code.
Figure. HQ cities: RBI in Mumbai, ISRO in Bengaluru, Supreme Court and Parliament in New Delhi.
| Institution | City |
|---|---|
| Reserve Bank of India | Mumbai |
| ISRO | Bengaluru |
| Supreme Court | New Delhi |
| Parliament | New Delhi |
RBI headquarters and ISRO headquarters, as locked here, are in which cities respectively?
- New Delhi and Mumbai
- Mumbai and Bengaluru
- Bengaluru and New Delhi
RBI is Mumbai; ISRO is Bengaluru. Supreme Court and Parliament are New Delhi — a common swap target.
6Eight classical dances and their states
Eight classical dances and their usual state associations: Bharatanatyam (Tamil Nadu), Kathak (North India / UP), Kathakali and Mohiniyattam (Kerala), Kuchipudi (Andhra Pradesh), Odissi (Odisha), Manipuri (Manipur), Sattriya (Assam).
Sattriya = Assam and Odissi = Odisha share starting letters with their states — a useful mnemonic. Bharatanatyam versus Kathakali is the classic South-India swap trap.
Figure. Eight classical dances with state locks. Kerala hosts both Kathakali and Mohiniyattam (swap trap with Bharatanatyam); Sattriya–Assam and Odissi–Odisha share starting letters.
| Dance | State / region |
|---|---|
| Bharatanatyam | Tamil Nadu |
| Kathak | North India / UP |
| Kathakali | Kerala |
| Mohiniyattam | Kerala |
| Kuchipudi | Andhra Pradesh |
| Odissi | Odisha |
| Manipuri | Manipur |
| Sattriya | Assam |
Bharatanatyam, one of India's oldest classical dance forms in exam framing, originated in which state?
- Kerala
- Tamil Nadu
- Odisha
Bharatanatyam ↔ Tamil Nadu. Kerala is Kathakali/Mohiniyattam; Odisha is Odissi.
7Tehri height and Statue of Unity
Tehri is India's tallest dam at about 260 m. The Statue of Unity in Gujarat, about 182 m, is the world's tallest statue and depicts Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Chain the four facts for the statue: Statue of Unity = Sardar Patel = Gujarat = world's tallest statue. Do not invent other monument heights the source does not give.
Figure. Honest height contrast: Tehri (~260 m) is India's tallest dam; Statue of Unity (~182 m, Gujarat, Sardar Patel) is the world's tallest statue — different records, same figure.
| Structure | What to lock |
|---|---|
| Tehri Dam | India's tallest dam; ~260 m; Bhagirathi, Uttarakhand |
| Statue of Unity | ~182 m; Gujarat; Sardar Patel; world's tallest statue |
The Statue of Unity is best identified as
- India's tallest dam on the Mahanadi
- The world's tallest statue, in Gujarat, depicting Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
- ISRO's headquarters monument in Bengaluru
Statue of Unity = Patel = Gujarat = world's tallest statue. Tehri is the tallest dam; ISRO HQ is Bengaluru — different facts.
8Longest river and highest waterfall
The Ganga is the longest river in India in the standard exam framing. Kunchikal Falls in Karnataka is often cited as the highest waterfall in India.
River length and waterfall height are separate superlatives — do not answer Ganga when the stem asks for the highest fall.
Figure. Separate superlatives: Ganga is the longest river in the standard exam framing; Kunchikal Falls (Karnataka) is often cited as the highest waterfall — do not answer Ganga for a height stem.
| Superlative | Answer |
|---|---|
| Longest river in India | Ganga |
| Highest waterfall (often cited) | Kunchikal Falls, Karnataka |
A paper asks for India's longest river and, in the next item, the waterfall often cited as highest. Which pairing matches the notes?
- Longest: Ganga; highest fall often cited: Kunchikal Falls (Karnataka)
- Longest: Kunchikal; highest fall: Ganga
- Longest: Sutlej; highest fall: Tehri
Ganga is the longest-river cue; Kunchikal Falls in Karnataka is the highest-fall cue. Sutlej/Tehri belong to the dam triplet, not these two superlatives.
Notes
- First in India: Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the first President, Jawaharlal Nehru the first Prime Minister, Sarojini Naidu the first woman Governor, and Indira Gandhi the first woman Prime Minister of India.

Exam traps & shortcuts
- Eight classical dances mnemonic - link each dance to its state; 'Sattriya = Assam' and 'Odissi = Odisha' share starting letters with their states for easy recall.
- National symbols: use 'Tiger-Peacock-Lotus-Banyan' as the core four that appear most often in exams.
- For 'first woman' facts, cluster them: first woman PM (Indira Gandhi), first woman President (Pratibha Patil), first woman Governor (Sarojini Naidu).
- Statue of Unity = Sardar Patel = Gujarat = world's tallest statue - chain these four facts together.
