National and international awards, their fields and recent recipients.
Eight concepts on awards as SSC and banking papers ask them: civilian Padma order, Bharat Ratna rules, wartime against peacetime gallantry, literary honours, cinema’s Dadasaheb Phalke, sports awards, Nobel venue split, and field-to-highest-honour pairs. Almost nothing computes — tables and pegs are the product.

1Bharat Ratna, then the Padmas
India’s civilian awards in descending order of precedence are Bharat Ratna (highest), Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Padma awards are announced on Republic Day.
A useful order cue is Vibhushan–Bhushan–Shri from highest to lowest — the longer Padma word ranks higher. Do not invent a fifth civilian tier between Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan.

A key ranks civilian awards as Bharat Ratna > Padma Shri > Padma Bhushan > Padma Vibhushan. What is wrong?
- Nothing — Padma Shri outranks the longer Padma names
- The Padma order is inverted: Vibhushan > Bhushan > Shri below Bharat Ratna
- Bharat Ratna is not a civilian award; the top is Padma Vibhushan
Correct descending order is Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri. The stem inverted the three Padma tiers.
2Bharat Ratna — at most three, may be posthumous
Two Bharat Ratna rules recur in static GK: a maximum of three persons can be conferred the Bharat Ratna in a single year, and it can be awarded posthumously.
Those rules sit beside precedence, not instead of it. A stem about 'how many in a year' is testing the three-person cap, not whether Bharat Ratna outranks Padma Vibhushan.

A claim says Bharat Ratna may be given to any number of people in a year but never after death. The accurate correction is
- Maximum three in a year; posthumous award is allowed
- Maximum one in a year; posthumous award is forbidden
- No annual cap; only Padma awards may be posthumous
Formulas lock a maximum of three Bharat Ratna awards in a single year, and allow posthumous conferment. The claim reversed both rules.
3Param Vir Chakra war, Ashoka Chakra peace
Gallantry awards split by wartime and peacetime. The Param Vir Chakra is the highest wartime gallantry award; the Ashoka Chakra is the highest peacetime gallantry award. Swapping those two is the most common trap in this topic.
Wartime hierarchy below PVC: Maha Vir Chakra, then Vir Chakra. Peacetime hierarchy below Ashoka Chakra: Kirti Chakra, then Shaurya Chakra. Lock war/peace before you lock the middle tiers.

A question asks for India’s highest wartime military gallantry award and an option list leads with Ashoka Chakra because it sounds senior. The honest answer is
- Ashoka Chakra — highest award overall, war or peace
- Param Vir Chakra — highest wartime; Ashoka Chakra is the peacetime counterpart
- Kirti Chakra — wartime middle tier that outranks Param Vir Chakra
Param Vir Chakra is highest wartime; Ashoka Chakra is highest peacetime. Kirti Chakra is a peacetime tier below Ashoka Chakra, not above PVC.
4Jnanpith and Sahitya Akademi
The Jnanpith Award is India’s highest literary honour for Indian-language literature. The Sahitya Akademi Award recognizes outstanding books in recognized languages.
For field-to-highest-honour drills, books map to Jnanpith. Do not promote Sahitya Akademi into the 'highest' slot — it is the outstanding-book recognition beside Jnanpith, not above it.

A stem asks for India’s highest literary honour and someone answers Sahitya Akademi because it names 'Akademi'. The correction is
- Sahitya Akademi is highest; Jnanpith is only for English books
- Jnanpith is the highest literary honour; Sahitya Akademi recognizes outstanding books in recognized languages
- Neither — Dadasaheb Phalke is the highest literary award
Jnanpith is the highest literary honour. Sahitya Akademi is a major book award, not the top literary slot. Dadasaheb Phalke is cinema.
5Dadasaheb Phalke — highest cinema honour
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India’s highest honour in cinema, presented as part of the National Film Awards. It is named after the figure often called the father of Indian cinema and marks outstanding lifetime contribution to Indian cinema.
In field drills: films = Dadasaheb Phalke. Do not confuse it with Jnanpith (literature) or Khel Ratna (sports).

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the highest honour given in which field, and which neighbouring field is the usual wrong swap?
- Literature — swap with Jnanpith is uncommon because the names look similar
- Cinema — the usual wrong swaps are literature (Jnanpith) or sports (Khel Ratna)
- Sports coaching — it is another name for the Dronacharya Award
Phalke is cinema’s highest honour. Jnanpith is literature; Khel Ratna is sports; Dronacharya is coaching — those are the neighbouring field pairs, not Phalke.
6Khel Ratna, Arjuna, Dronacharya
For sports, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award (still often called Khel Ratna / formerly Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna) is India’s highest sporting honour. The Arjuna Award recognizes performance. The Dronacharya Award honours coaches.
Lock three pairs: sports performance peak → Khel Ratna; performance recognition → Arjuna; coaching → Dronacharya. Precedence among civilian Padmas is a different ladder.

A coaching-excellence stem is answered with Arjuna Award because the athlete improved under that coach. The honest award for coaches is
- Arjuna Award — it covers both athletes and coaches
- Dronacharya Award — coaching; Arjuna is performance; Khel Ratna is the highest sporting honour
- Bharat Ratna — automatic for any national coach
Dronacharya is the coaching honour. Arjuna recognizes performance; Khel Ratna is the highest sporting honour. Bharat Ratna is the top civilian award, not the sports-coaching slot.
7Nobel categories; Peace in Oslo
Nobel Prizes are awarded in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, Peace and Economic Sciences. The Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo; the others in Stockholm.
Oscars (Academy Awards) honour cinema and the Booker Prize honours fiction in English — international neighbours in the notes, not Nobel categories. The Oslo/Stockholm split is the highest-frequency Nobel trap.

Only the Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo; the rest are in Stockholm. Booker is not a Nobel venue fact.
8Field → highest honour pairs
Cross-field stems collapse to three fixed pairs from the tricks: books → Jnanpith, films → Dadasaheb Phalke, sports → Khel Ratna (Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna). Civilian precedence and gallantry ladders are separate systems.
If a stem names the field, answer with that field’s top honour. If it names the honour, answer with the field — do not cross the three pairs.

A mixed list asks for the highest honour in Indian cinema and includes Jnanpith and Khel Ratna as distractors. The correct pick is
- Jnanpith — cinema is filed under literature in award keys
- Dadasaheb Phalke — cinema’s highest; Jnanpith is literature and Khel Ratna is sports
- Khel Ratna — any performing art counts as sport for award purposes
Films map to Dadasaheb Phalke. Jnanpith is literature; Khel Ratna is sports — the two distractors the field-pair drill is built to reject.
